The person I married…

Arpita Sharma Life

A few years ago, I was really struggling with being single. I felt vulnerable and afraid that no one would ever love me for who I was. It is something I still struggle with, but I approach it differently now. And it’s thanks to this TED Talk by Tracy McMillan.

She said some profound things in this talk that made me realize the pressure I was putting on myself to find “the one.”

“The places where you have the biggest challenges are the place you have the most to give.”

This really hit home listening to her. And it made me realize that yes, I too needed to marry myself. The four main takeaways I got were:

  1. I should love myself unconditionally. Loving myself exactly where I am is the only way to get where I am going.
  2. I should love myself through the big life disappointments (house, career, family).
  3. I should forgive myself for my mistakes – and be the person I can count on.
  4. I should love myself the way I would want someone else to love me.

It made me realize that I wasn’t ever going to feel whole until I learned how to love myself. “The only relationship that you are ever going to have is with yourself, you will just have it with someone else.” says Tracy – profound words to live by.

Hopefully seeing this TED Talk will help you love yourself more.
